The Thanksgiving Road Trip: When to Leave, Where to Stop and How to Keep Everyone Happy
By Dillon14 min read
The trunk will not close. You've moved the cooler twice, turned the folding chair sideways, and someone has handed you a pie in a carrier that is now your responsibility until Thursday. It's Tuesday, a little after noon, and the group chat says the highway is already filling up.
A Thanksgiving road trip is mostly a timing problem with a turkey at the end of it. Leave an hour sooner and the miles feel like a drive. Leave an hour later and they feel like a parking lot. Add children, a grandmother's dinner hour and a forecast, and the hour you walk out the door starts to matter more than the route.
This post is built around that hour. It walks through the week one day at a time, using last year's traffic forecast, then lays out five family routes from our library, with stops that work for kids and nights that keep a long drive from turning sour. Filter by direction, sort the table, or read straight down.
- 70premade routes tagged for families
