A four-day loop from San Jose through Santa Cruz, Monterey and Carmel, with a lunch stop in Salinas on the way home. Short legs and easy driving.
A short loop for a long weekend. Start in San Jose, cross the Santa Cruz Mountains to the beach, then follow the curve of Monterey Bay south. The legs are short, so there is time to stop at a beach, a farm stand or a lookout without watching the clock.
Santa Cruz is the beach town, Monterey is the aquarium and the waterfront, and Carmel is the village of small lanes and galleries just south. Each one fits an easy half day, so you can do all three without rushing. On the way back, Salinas sits in the farm valley, with a museum for the writer John Steinbeck, who was born there.
Summer mornings are often foggy on the bay and clear by afternoon, so plan beach time after lunch. Weekends fill up, so book Monterey and Carmel early. If you have another day, drive south toward Big Sur for the coast views, and check road status before you go, since sections of Highway 1 close from time to time.
