South Fulton is a young city in the southwest corner of Fulton County, Georgia, formed in 2017 from the unincorporated area south and west of Atlanta. It is a residential and commercial place rather than a postcard town, and most visitors arrive because of its position beside Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport or for a show at Wolf Creek Amphitheater. The land is rolling and wooded, with large shopping centers along the main roads and quiet neighborhoods behind them. Fairburn, Palmetto and Chattahoochee Hills lie just to the south and west, so the area also works as a doorway to rural west Georgia. Treat it as a low-key, practical stop rather than a sightseeing destination.
The headline venue is Wolf Creek Amphitheater, an outdoor concert space on a wooded site that runs its main season from May to September. Wolf Creek Golf Club sits nearby, and the South Fulton Tennis Center draws players of all levels. The Southwest Arts Center stages live theater, exhibits and classes, and the city holds free community events there through the year. For a walk, Cochran Mill Park in neighboring Chattahoochee Hills has long shared trails, rock outcrops, waterfalls and the ruins of old mills, about 20 miles from the airport. Camp Creek Marketplace, close to the airport, is the largest shopping stop in the area.
Food here is local and varied rather than tied to one signature dish. Caribbean and seafood kitchens such as Andrea's Caribbean & Seafood stand out, and Southern, soul food and barbecue restaurants are easy to find along the main roads. Brunch rooms, tapas bars and Southern-Mexican places such as Blu Cantina add choice. Camp Creek Marketplace has a large block of familiar chains, handy for a quick meal before a flight. Nightlife means concerts at Wolf Creek in the warm months and lounges with DJs. For a bigger night out, most visitors drive into Atlanta, where Midtown, the Westside and downtown are a short ride away.
Hotels cluster near the airport and along the Camp Creek and Old National Highway corridors, with plenty of chain properties and extended-stay suites that include kitchens. A car is the practical choice. The city is spread out, parking is free and easy at most venues, and rideshare is common for concerts. Some MARTA bus routes, including the Camp Creek route, link the area with the East Point rail station, and the Red and Gold lines run from there and from the airport station into Atlanta. Check schedules before relying on buses. Hartsfield-Jackson is only minutes away by road.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons, with mild days that suit hiking at Cochran Mill and open-air shows at Wolf Creek. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms, and the concert season runs straight through it, so carry water and a light rain jacket. Winters are mild, with an occasional cold snap and now and then a stray ice storm. Spring pollen is heavy and can bother allergy sufferers. One day covers a concert or a round of golf, a trail and a meal. A second day leaves room for Chattahoochee Hills or a trip into Atlanta. Most travelers stay one night, often around a flight.
South Fulton sits on the southwest edge of the Atlanta region, where Interstate 285 meets Interstate 85 and Interstate 20, so roads fan out in every direction. Interstate 85 runs southwest toward Montgomery, Alabama, and northeast through Atlanta toward Greenville and Charlotte. Interstate 20 leads west to Birmingham and east to Augusta and Columbia. It makes a sensible overnight at the start or end of a Southeast road trip, especially with a late arrival or early departure from the airport. Atlanta's big attractions are close enough for a long day trip, and the quiet country south of the city suits a slower detour.
