Shelburne Falls is a village of 1,719 people in Franklin County, Massachusetts, split between the towns of Shelburne and Buckland where the Deerfield River pours over a rocky ledge, with Massaemett Mountain rising to the east. It grew up as a mill village: in 1837 Lamson & Goodnow set up cutlery works powered by the falls, and by the Civil War the company employed more than 500 people, one of the largest cutlery makers in the country. The factories have mostly gone, but the compact 19th-century centre they built remains, now a National Register historic district of brick storefronts, galleries and cafés above the river.
The Bridge of Flowers is the sight everyone comes for: a disused trolley bridge over the Deerfield, planted as a public garden and in bloom from spring into fall. Below the iron road bridge, the river has worn a field of smooth glacial potholes and cascades into the bedrock, visible from Bridge Street. The Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum keeps the village's rail story, running its restored 1896 trolley car, No. 10, on a short length of track. Memorial Hall, the village hall, hosts films and performances, and the Lamson outlet store still sells the knives the village has made for nearly two centuries. Television crews found the place too: the series Dexter: New Blood filmed here, dressed as a town in upstate New York.
For a village this size, the eating is good. Bridge Street holds cafés, a bakery, artisan shops and galleries, and the West End Pub pours local beer across the river in Buckland; in summer, coffee and ice cream on Bridge Street are a small ritual. The Shelburne Arts Cooperative sells work by hilltown artists, and farm stands and orchards dot the roads out of town. Nightlife is a quiet drink and an early night; the entertainment is the river, the gardens and the dark skies. Underneath the postcard there is a working village too: a candlepin bowling alley, the Arms Library and the everyday shops of a place that still serves the surrounding hilltowns.
Stay in a bed and breakfast on one of the village's side streets, an inn above the river, or a motel or cabin along the Mohawk Trail toward Charlemont. The whole village is a ten-minute walk end to end, and parking is easy. Franklin Regional Transit Authority buses run a few times a day between Greenfield, the village and Charlemont on weekdays, but a car is the realistic way to arrive and to explore the hilltowns.
Come between May and October for the Bridge of Flowers and the river at their best. June brings Riverfest, August the community dinner served on the iron bridge itself, and November both Franklin County CiderDays and Moonlight Magic, when the village lights candles and closes its streets on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Winter is quiet and cold, with skiing at Berkshire East just up the road in Charlemont. One night is enough for the village; two make a base for the trail.
Shelburne Falls sits on Massachusetts Route 2, the Mohawk Trail, the classic Boston-to-the-Berkshires drive: Greenfield and Interstate 91 are about 20 minutes east, and the road winds west through Charlemont to the Hoosac Tunnel, North Adams and Vermont. Route 112 drops south to Buckland and Ashfield. It is the natural pause between the Pioneer Valley and the Berkshire hills.
