San Diego feels smaller and more relaxed than the cities north of it. It spreads across mesas and canyons toward the Pacific, with a bay full of navy ships, a downtown that faces the water and a string of beach towns with their own habits. The military presence is real, and so is the border, which lies only a short ride to the south. Visitors tend to split their time between the park, the harbor and the beaches. The pace is slow, the weather is mild, and most areas can be reached in a short drive. It is an easy city to get to know in a few days.
Balboa Park is the anchor. It holds a cluster of museums, gardens and the Old Globe theatre in Spanish-style buildings, and the San Diego Zoo is on its northern side. Down at the harbor, the USS Midway Museum is a retired aircraft carrier you can walk through. Across the bay, Coronado has the Hotel del Coronado and a wide beach, reached by ferry or bridge. Further west, Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma has views of the harbor, and La Jolla Cove has sea lions and snorkelling. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve offers coastal walks above the surf. Old Town State Historic Park covers the early settlement.
Fish tacos and California burritos are the local specialities. Taco shops across the city, and especially in Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach, serve them in casual surroundings. Little Italy has many sit-down restaurants and a Saturday farmers market. San Diego is also a craft beer town, with breweries clustered in North Park and the Miramar area. The Gaslamp Quarter is the busy nightlife district downtown, with bars and clubs in restored Victorian buildings. For something quieter, North Park and Hillcrest have cocktail bars and live music. Seafood is best near the water, including Point Loma.
Where you stay shapes the trip. Downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter are central, with the trolley and the harbor close. Pacific Beach and Mission Beach are lively and casual, good for surfers and groups. La Jolla is quieter and more upscale, with coves and cafes. Coronado suits couples who want a resort-style stay with a walkable village. The San Diego Trolley links downtown with Old Town, the border at San Ysidro and parts of the east, and the Coaster commuter train runs north. For beaches and the zoo, most visitors drive. Parking is manageable, though beach lots fill on summer weekends.
San Diego works in every month. Summer brings beach crowds and sometimes a gray marine layer in late spring and early summer. Autumn is often warm and clear, and winter is mild with a few rainy days and whale watching offshore. Three days covers Balboa Park, the harbor, Coronado and a beach. Add a fourth if you want the zoo, La Jolla and a long lunch in Little Italy. A single day can work as a break on the way between Los Angeles and Mexico, centred on Balboa Park and a harbor walk.
The city marks the southern end of Interstate 5 and the Pacific Surfliner route from Los Angeles. Heading north, Carlsbad and Encinitas are a short drive along the coast. Inland, the Anza-Borrego desert and Julian's apple orchards offer a very different day out. Tijuana lies just across the border. Many visitors cross on foot at San Ysidro with passports, but check the current rules for returning. Palm Springs is a straightforward drive northeast for a long trip loop.
