Port Coquitlam, known locally as PoCo, is a suburban city east of Vancouver, where the Coquitlam River and the Pitt River meet. It grew up around the railway and the river, and it still has a small, walkable downtown along McAllister Avenue, with dikes, farmland and mountain views on its edges. This is not a place with a long list of big sights. People come for a gentle walk or ride on the river trail, a look at the local museum and a sense of ordinary Lower Mainland life. It is also the hometown of Terry Fox, which gives the city a quiet pride and a few reminders around town.
The Traboulay PoCo Trail is the main outdoor draw. It is a loop of paths along dikes and riverbanks around much of the city, good for walking and easy cycling, with open views toward the mountains. Downtown, Leigh Square is the arts and events centre, with galleries and summer concerts. PoCo Heritage, the city's museum and archives, sits on McAllister Avenue and tells the story of the railway town. Next door in Coquitlam, ƛ̓éxətəm Regional Park, formerly Colony Farm, has flat trails along the river and plenty of birds. The Terry Fox Library is named for the runner, who grew up in the city.
Food here is relaxed and local rather than a reason to travel. Downtown PoCo has cafes, bakeries and family restaurants, and the Lougheed Highway strip has the usual chain options. In summer the farmers market and the free concerts at Leigh Square add some life to the afternoons and evenings. Bring a picnic for the trail if you like, since the loop passes parks and open grass with plenty of places to stop. For a bigger night out, most people ride or drive into Vancouver, which has far more restaurants, bars and live music.
Port Coquitlam has limited lodging of its own, so many visitors stay in neighbouring Coquitlam or in Vancouver and come in for the day. Downtown is the most pleasant place to be on foot, and the trail is close by. A car is the easiest way around, and parking is simple in most places. TransLink buses cover the city, and the West Coast Express commuter train stops here, but it runs only on weekday rush hours, mainly toward Vancouver in the morning and back in the evening. SkyTrain is a short hop away at Coquitlam Central.
Late spring through early autumn is the comfortable season for the trail and the outdoor events. Summers are mostly dry and warm, autumn brings gold along the river, and winter is mild but grey and wet. The Terry Fox Hometown Run in September is a meaningful time to visit. A few hours is enough to walk part of the trail, see the square and the museum, and have lunch downtown. Half a day works well, and a full day makes sense if you add the regional park or a longer cycle.
PoCo sits on the Lougheed Highway, about half an hour's drive from Vancouver in light traffic. To the north, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge lead to Golden Ears Provincial Park, with its mountain and lake scenery. To the east, the Lougheed continues through Mission toward the Fraser Valley and Chilliwack. Highway 1 and the Mary Hill Bypass link the city across the river to the rest of Metro Vancouver. It suits a calm base or an easy break between the city and the valley, not as a destination on its own.
