Peoria stretches from older neighborhoods near Grand Avenue north into desert foothills and toward the shore of Lake Pleasant. The southern part is a typical Phoenix suburb of subdivisions, shopping centers and parks, while the northern end feels more open, with mountains, washes and a large reservoir. Old Town Peoria is the historic core, with a small town square, older brick buildings and a handful of restaurants and breweries. Centennial Plaza, a newer public space, hosts the city's festivals. Peoria is a place for baseball fans and outdoor lovers rather than sightseers, and you will drive between everything you want to see.
Baseball and the lake are the two big draws. Peoria Sports Complex is a spring training ballpark that also hosts community festivals and fireworks through the year. Lake Pleasant Regional Park is a large reservoir with boat ramps, kayak and paddleboard rentals, campgrounds and ridge trails with long desert views, and the Discovery Center above the lake explains the plants, animals and history of the area. Closer in, the New River Trail gives walkers and cyclists a paved path, and Peoria Cove is a shipwreck-themed playground with water play. The Peoria Center for the Performing Arts, a small theater in Old Town, stages local productions.
Dining in Peoria is relaxed and mostly local in feel around Old Town, where small places serve coffee, wood-fired pizza, barbecue and craft beer. A gastropub with its own brewery and a speakeasy-style bar adds an evening option. Park West, a shopping district near Loop 101, collects familiar restaurants and shops in one open-air center. The ballpark serves local food and craft beer on game days. Nightlife is modest, built around breweries, sports bars and baseball evenings, so visitors who want a bigger night out usually drive east to Westgate in Glendale. Campers at Lake Pleasant usually bring supplies or drive back into town for dinner.
Chain hotels cluster along the Loop 101 corridor near the sports complex and Park West, which makes them the practical base for a baseball weekend. Camping and RV sites at Lake Pleasant suit people who want to stay by the water. Old Town has the most character but little lodging, so treat it as an evening stop. You will need a car, since Valley Metro bus service is thin and the city is large. Loop 101, Loop 303 and Grand Avenue (US 60) carry most traffic. Parking is easy almost everywhere, and Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport is a freeway drive across the valley.
February through April is the sweet spot, when spring training games, cool mornings and green desert hills come together. October and November are also pleasant for the lake and for trails, with festivals in Old Town and at the plaza. Summer is very hot, and it is the season when boaters head to Lake Pleasant to cool off, so go early or late in the day. Winter nights can be cold, but days are sunny. One day covers Old Town and a game, and two days add a morning on the lake and a hike. Add a third day if you plan to see more spring training parks.
Peoria sits on the northwest edge of the Phoenix area, which makes it a handy first or last stop. Loop 101 links it to Glendale, Scottsdale and Tempe, and Interstate 17 leads north to Sedona and Flagstaff. State Route 74 runs west past Lake Pleasant toward US 60 and Wickenburg, giving a quiet back road out of the valley. Surprise and Glendale are close enough to see on the same baseball weekend, and Lake Pleasant works as a full day trip. A night here suits a spring training trip or a stop before heading into the Sonoran hills.
