Lewisville is a modest suburb northwest of Dallas on Interstate 35E, beside Lewisville Lake, and it is honest to call it a quick stop rather than a destination. It has a small Old Town with a historic feel, a good amount of lakeside nature, and a convenient position close to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. There are no big attractions and no famous sights. What it offers is calm: some water, some trails, a pleasant main street and an easy place to sleep near the airport. Plan a few hours, an evening or one night, and pair it with a bigger neighbor.
The lake is the main reason to stop. Lewisville Lake is a large reservoir used for paddling, fishing and boating, and Lake Park gives public access to the shore. The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area, known as LLELA, is a nature preserve with trails, wetlands, hardwood forest, birdwatching and camping beside the lake. In Old Town, the Lewisville Grand Theater hosts performances and has an art gallery, and Wayne Ferguson Plaza hosts the Western Days festival. Bendt Distilling Co. offers tours and tastings, and a farmers market runs in Old Town on Thursdays through the warmer months.
Old Town is where to eat. The Prairie House Restaurant is a steakhouse in a converted nineteenth-century feed mill, Main Street Cafe and Irene's Bakery suit a casual meal, and Bendt Distilling is a local distillery with tastings. Castle Hills, a planned community on the west side, has its own cluster of casual restaurants and a monthly farmers market. Nightlife is quiet. The best evenings are a patio dinner, a show at the Grand Theater or a sunset by the lake. For a bigger night out, Denton and Dallas are both reachable by car or train.
Old Town is the most pleasant base, with the Grand Theater and restaurants within walking distance and a station on the DCTA A-train. Chain hotels line Interstate 35E and State Highway 121, close to the airport and easy for drivers. Castle Hills offers a quieter residential stay. Most of the city is a driving city with easy parking, and the lake and LLELA need a car. The A-train runs from Old Town to Denton and connects at Trinity Mills with the DART Green Line, so a car-free trip to Dallas is possible but slow. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is a short drive away.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons, with comfortable days for the trails, the lake and the Old Town events. Western Days Festival fills Old Town in September, and the Sounds of Lewisville concerts run in June and July. Summer is hot and humid, so plan lake time for the morning or evening. Spring storms can be strong, and winters are mild with occasional ice. A few hours cover a walk at LLELA and a meal in Old Town. One night works if you are catching an early flight or want a quiet stop before driving on.
Lewisville sits on Interstate 35E, with Denton to the north and Dallas to the south, and State Highway 121 links it with Plano and Frisco to the east and the airport side of the metro to the west. Little Elm Beach and Ray Roberts Lake State Park are within a short drive for more lake time and camping. Use Lewisville as a calm overnight near the airport, a lake stop on the way to Denton or Oklahoma, or a quieter base for a day in Dallas or Fort Worth. Grapevine and Lake Grapevine lie to the southwest if you want more lake and a historic main street.
