Jurupa Valley lies along the Santa Ana River in western Riverside County, made up of older communities such as Rubidoux, Mira Loma, Glen Avon and Pedley. Across the river, Mount Rubidoux rises over the neighboring city of Riverside. The area is mostly homes, farms and warehouses, so it is not on the usual tourist circuit. What it offers a traveler is one strong county park with camping, a few quiet river-side trails, and quick access to downtown Riverside and Ontario. It suits road trippers who want a calm place to pitch a tent or park an RV near several freeways.
Rancho Jurupa Regional Park is the main reason to stop. It sits along the Santa Ana River behind Mount Rubidoux and has two campgrounds, rental cabins, two fishing lakes, a splash pad, miniature golf, disc golf and a rock-climbing playground. Swimming is not allowed in the lakes. Historic Crestmore Manor stands on the park grounds. The Santa Ana River Trail is a short distance away for walking and cycling. Across the river in Riverside, Mount Rubidoux has a walking road to the summit with wide views, and the historic downtown and the Mission Inn are only minutes by car.
Jurupa Valley is not a restaurant destination. The older streets of Rubidoux and Mira Loma have taquerias, bakeries and family restaurants, and the freeway exits add the usual chains. For a more varied meal, drive into downtown Riverside, where restaurants, breweries and bars cluster near the Mission Inn. Ontario, a short drive north, has large shopping centers and a wider choice of places to eat late. Campers at Rancho Jurupa usually cook at the site and stock up on supplies in town. Nightlife in Jurupa Valley itself is quiet, which is part of the appeal for anyone who just wants to sleep well.
The easiest base is the campground at Rancho Jurupa, where cabins suit travelers without a tent. Hotels sit along Interstate 15, Highway 60 and near Ontario Airport, and downtown Riverside is a good option for anyone who wants restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. A car is essential, because the communities are spread out and parking is easy almost everywhere. Riverside Transit Agency runs bus routes, but service is limited. Ontario International Airport is a short drive northwest, which makes the area handy for early flights, late arrivals or a rental-car pickup at the start of a trip.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons, with comfortable days for fishing, cycling and camping. Summers are hot and dry, so plan outdoor time for early morning or evening. Autumn can bring dry Santa Ana winds, and wildfire smoke is possible in some years. Winters are mild with occasional rain. One night is enough for a stopover. Two nights give a full day at the park and a half day in Riverside, including a walk up Mount Rubidoux. Longer stays make sense only for campers who want a quiet base for exploring the wider Inland Empire.
Jurupa Valley sits where several major routes meet. Interstate 15 runs north to Las Vegas and south through Corona to Temecula wine country and San Diego. Highway 60 leads east toward Palm Springs by way of Interstate 10, and west toward Los Angeles. Highway 91 is a short drive south, linking to Anaheim and the Orange County coast. A night here fits a trip between Las Vegas and the coast, or a loop that includes Palm Springs. It is a calmer, less crowded alternative to staying near the main attractions in Los Angeles.
