Fayetteville is a college city in Washington County in northwest Arkansas, on the edge of the Boston Mountains within the Ozarks. It is the county seat, the second most populous city in Arkansas and home to the University of Arkansas, the state's flagship university. When classes are in session, thousands of students change the pace of the whole city, and Razorback sports shape its weekends. The historic Square and Dickson Street give it a compact, walkable centre, while trails and wooded hills start close to downtown. It is the cultural centre of the fast-growing Northwest Arkansas metro area, and it feels younger than most cities its size.
The university is the biggest sight. Old Main anchors a campus historic district of 25 buildings in a park-like arboretum, and Senior Walk records the name of every graduate in the sidewalks. Dickson Street, the best-known entertainment district in Arkansas, runs from campus toward downtown with the Walton Arts Center, TheatreSquared and George's Majestic Lounge, the oldest live music venue in the state. A few blocks away, the Fayetteville Historic Square holds gardens, boutiques and the farmers' market, which has run since 1974. The Clinton House Museum preserves the first home of Bill and Hillary Clinton. The Botanical Garden of the Ozarks, Wilson Park and the 36-mile Razorback Regional Greenway round out the outdoor list.
Dickson Street and the Square carry the food and nightlife. Fayetteville has a strong barbecue tradition, mostly Memphis-style with some Texas influence, and its commercial districts add Thai, Vietnamese and Cajun restaurants alongside cafes and diners. George's Majestic Lounge has hosted live concerts since the 1970s, and bars, breweries and small venues keep Dickson busy most nights of the week, and very busy on game weekends. The Fayetteville Roots Festival ties the scene together each summer as a celebration of local food and music in and around the Square. Evenings here are the liveliest of any small city in Arkansas.
Downtown and Dickson Street make the easiest base, with hotels and inns within walking distance of the Square, the arts centre and campus. Uptown, around the Northwest Arkansas Mall in north Fayetteville, has newer hotels and chain restaurants, and College Avenue carries motels and student-oriented stays. Razorback Transit buses are free and centred on the university, Ozark Regional Transit runs across the metro area, and Jefferson Lines provides intercity bus service. Interstate 49 runs up the west side of town, and Northwest Arkansas National Airport is 17 miles northwest. A car helps for trailheads and day trips, but the centre works well on foot.
Autumn is the signature season, with Razorback football at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, cooler air and colour in the Boston Mountains to the south. Spring is green and busy with baseball at Baum Stadium and the farmers' market in full swing. Summer is hot and humid and a little quieter when students leave, though the Roots Festival and trails keep it active. Winter is cold at times, and the Lights of the Ozarks turns the Square into a holiday display from November into January. Plan on two to three days, and book early for football weekends, when rooms across the metro area fill.
Fayetteville sits on Interstate 49 and U.S. Route 71, the main corridor through Northwest Arkansas. North leads to Springdale, Rogers and Bentonville, with Kansas City beyond, and south the interstate crosses the Boston Mountains to Fort Smith. U.S. Route 62 heads east toward Eureka Springs and west toward Oklahoma, and the Boston Mountains Scenic Loop on the old highway south of town is the slower, prettier drive. That makes Fayetteville the natural base and overnight stop for the whole northwest corner of the state, pairing easily with Bentonville's museums and Eureka Springs in one road trip.
