Chester
Chester is a sailing village of 2,390 on a peninsula in Mahone Bay, a summer colony since the 1800s and home to Chester Race Week, Canada's largest keelboat regatta. Two harbours, a Tancook Island ferry and a rebuilt playhouse fill its short, bright season.

Chester is a village of about 2,400 on a peninsula jutting into Mahone Bay on Nova Scotia's South Shore, about 55 minutes southwest of Halifax. New England Planters founded it in 1759, and since the late 1800s it has been one of the Maritimes' classic summer colonies, full of yachts, tennis whites and big shingled houses above two harbours, the Front Harbour on the bay and the Back Harbour in behind. The village is the seat of the Municipality of the District of Chester, but its character is set by the water and by the Chester Yacht Club, around which the summer social season turns. The two harbours explain the village's shape: everything strings along the shore between them, and almost every lane ends at a wharf, a beach or a view over the bay.
Chester Race Week, in mid-August, is the headline: Canada's largest keelboat regatta, with well over a hundred boats racing by day and the village partying by night. The rest of the season the harbour runs quieter pleasures: sailing lessons and charters, kayaking among the bay's islands, and the ferry from the Front Harbour wharf to Big and Little Tancook Island, a favourite day trip for the island beaches and bicycle lanes. On shore, the Chester Playhouse, rebuilt and reopened after a 2021 fire destroyed the old theatre, anchors the arts season; the Lordly House Museum, an 1806 Georgian merchant's house, covers the village's history, and the Lido Pool, a saltwater pool by the yacht club, is the summer swim. Behind the village, the Back Harbour is the quiet twin: trails and shore on still water, where the locals walk and the summer crowds rarely follow.
The village eats well in season: harbour-view restaurants, a good bakery and cafés along Pleasant Street and the Shore Road, with seafood and farm produce from Lunenburg County. Race Week aside, evenings end early; the Playhouse stage and the yacht club are as lively as it gets. Pleasant Street is the eating street, the Shore Road tables catch the evening light over the Front Harbour, and the bakery line on a summer morning is the village's first social event of the day.
Stay in heritage inns, B&Bs and summer rentals in the village, cottages all over the peninsula, or campgrounds and motels nearer the highway at Chester Basin and the exits. Summer books out, especially Race Week; winter is residents only. The village core walks easily between the harbours, but the peninsula's beaches and coves want a car or bike. Halifax's airport is about 50 minutes northeast on Highway 103. The Tancook ferry makes Chester work without a car for a day: ride over in the morning, walk or cycle the islands, and be back at the wharf in time for dinner.
Chester is a May-to-September place, cresting in August with Race Week and the warmest water; fall is fine and quiet, and the off-season village nearly closes to visitors. One to two days covers the village and a Tancook crossing; sailors give it a week. On the South Shore run, Chester is the sailing overnight between Halifax and Lunenburg, the sportier sibling of Mahone Bay, fifteen minutes up the shore. The season opens with the Farmers' and Artisans Market in June, the weekly meeting of peninsula growers, bakers and makers that runs through the summer.
